STATEWIDE – It could one day become illegal for telemarketers to use a fake number on caller ID if a bill submitted by a state lawmaker from Orono is passed.
Rep. Ryan Tipping, D-Orono, said his bill aims to combat fraud and would fine those responsible.
The problem is that Maine residents have been getting calls from 207 numbers but the callers often are computers or someone from out of state — or even out of the country.
“We’re always seeing warnings, especially for the elderly who are targeted by these scams, so we want to make sure we’re proactive,” Tipping said. “I’ve had people contact me saying ‘Absolutely, I get these calls, they’re annoying.'”
Tipping said some states already have enacted similar laws. If the proposal gets legislative approval, the fine would be $500 for the first offense and $1,000 for any violations thereafter.
