PORTLAND (WGME) – A protest in Portland on Presidents’ Day was among many in the nation held Monday to oppose the president’s national emergency declaration.
“As a policy of trying to exclude folks from coming into this country, it is what our country was built on,” said Rep. Mike Sylvester, D-Portland.
“It is what a day like this should be honoring. It’s the idea that this is a country where everybody can come achieve their dreams. Instead, it’s a day where we are standing out in the snow fighting the policies of division,” he said.
The White House is defending the declaration and has indicated that the president is ready to veto any congressional effort to overturn or condemn the move.
