AUGUSTA – Legislation has been proposed that will protect residents living in multi-unit complexes from certain sex offenders trying to establish residency.
Senator Scott Cyrway is introducing a bill that would make it legal to notify anyone with minor children that a registered sex offender is living, or has applied to live in, the multi-unit complex in which they would use the same entryway.
Cyrway also says this legislation would support landlords as well.
“This would allow the landlord to ask the question in their application, and if they failed to let them know they are a sex offender or they lie about it, that would be a Class E crime,” said Sen. Scott Cyrway, R-Kennebec.
Cyrway says the bottom line of this bill is to make sure the public feels safe.
