BANGOR – The Maine Multicultural Center held a community forum at the Bangor Public Library.
“Getting in Touch with Your Inner Bias” was the theme of the night.
“It’s a job for all of us to expand our abilities to accept and embrace each other.” Nancy Jacobson, a board member for the Maine Multicultural Center said.
Monday night’s forum focused primarily on microaggressions.
John Mascetta, the University Of Maine’s director of academic advising, led the forum.
“He’s talking about implicit biases,” Jacobson said. “It’s something that we unintentionally all have. Not that we’re evil, just that it is part of us and helping us recognize what ours are.”
Chris Linder, another board member, said he hopes this forum helps people become more aware of how they speak to others.
“One small comment from me or someone else may not seem like a big deal,” he said. “But if you hear it 20 times could really have a huge impact on someone.”
Forums on a variety of topics are regularly hosted by the Maine Multicultural Center in Bangor.
