BANGOR – A transient man had a close call early Friday morning when the dumpster he was inside of was picked up and dumped into the receptacle of a trash truck at Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, according to city firefighters.
Staffers at Westgate Manor, a nursing home about two miles away, heard cries for help coming from the trash truck as they arrived for work just before 5 a.m. and called for help, according to a Bangor Fire Department Facebook post.
Firefighters said the operator of the trash truck had no idea anyone was in with the trash. They said they believe the man was sleeping when the dumpster was emptied into the trash truck.
First responders worked with the trash truck driver to get the man out of the truck, according to the Facebook post. The man then was taken to a local hospital with injuries that included a broken leg, officials said.
Fire crews remained at Westgate Manor to pick up the trash that had been unloaded to free the man.
