SKOWHEGAN – Many people will be celebrating Maine Maple Sunday this weekend but those who are looking for some activities to kick off the festivities a little early can head to the annual Skowhegan Maple Festival.
Kristina Cannon, executive director of Main Street Skowhegan, said Somerset County is the biggest producer of maple syrup out of all the counties across the United States.
Events begin Friday night but Cannon said most of the activities will take place Saturday, beginning with a breakfast.
“After breakfast, people can go out and do a maple leaf scavenger hunt throughout the downtown. We also have lots of family activities happening in the municipal parking lot, including maple marshmallow roasting”
Cannon said a shuttle bus will be on hand to take people to a few of the local sap houses. She said the festival will wrap up Saturday night so that people can check out sap houses for Maine Maple Sunday.
