BANGOR – A LaGrange man will spend the next five years in jail in connection with an escape attempt last year that involved stealing a police car.
Tyler Tibbetts, 22, had been arrested by Dexter police on some outstanding warrants in May 2018 when the arresting officer left him alone in the cruiser long enough for him to get into driver’s seat and take off in it.
Tibbetts crashed the police cruiser but then stole a nearby car, continuing his escape attempt before he eventually drove it over a spike strip, flattening the tires.
“Really, just incredible that there wasn’t other injury, that certainly law enforcement weren’t hurt by it,” Penobscot County District Attorney Marianne Lynch said during Tibbetts’ sentencing Thursday at the Penobscot Judicial Center.
Judge John Lucey sentenced Tibbetts to 10 years at the Maine State prison but he will only have to serve five of those years as long as he follows the probation requirements.
