ORONO – Municipalities across Maine are using solar energy or exploring their options.
“One of the councilors was very interested in promoting solar in the town and she brought it forward as an initiative.” Cynthia Mehnert, Orono Town Council’s Chair, said.
At a workshop Monday night, Orono Town Council members discussed the possibility of using solar energy.
Kurt Penney from Revision Energy said the biggest challenge isn’t whether or not it will work, but the best way to install them.
He was there to discuss the town’s options, including cost and placement of the panels.
“There’s a lot of different factors going into it with the purchase power agreements and where we would locate solar if we did solar.” Mehnert said. “I think we’re still at the very beginning stages.”
Mehnert said that solar energy would only be used to power municipal buildings.
“It’s also possible to reduce some of the costs of electricity in the town.” she said.
The council is planning to discuss this at another workshop next month.
