ELLSWORTH – Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office are still working to determine the cause of a fire that swept through an apartment house on Oak Street Thursday.
Shortly after 2 p.m., crews were called to 65 Oak St. for what started as a fire in the basement that quickly spread to the rest of the house.
Ellsworth Fire Chief Richard Tupper said manpower was an issue when they first arrived on the scene and the wind helped fan the flames.
Firefighters from 11 towns helped extinguish the fire.
The road had to be shut down for several hours while crews worked to put out the flames.
The five-unit apartment house was home to eight adults and one child.
Officials said the house is a total loss.
