NORTHPORT – A fugitive from Texas was arrested in Northport on Sunday.
James Helms, 45, was arrested on a fugitive warrant in connection with a charge of sex crimes with a minor, according to a statement from the Maine State Police.
Spokesman Steve McCausland said Helms fled from Brownwood, Texas last year while Texas Rangers were investigating the sex crimes allegations.
According to McCausland, Helms has been living in the midcoast region for the past year while working as a handyman.
Helms is being held at Waldo County Jail while he awaits his return to Texas. There has been no word yet on whether Helms plans to fight extradition.
