BANGOR – A Maine State Police trooper was struck and killed this morning in a crash on Interstate 95 in Hampden, according to a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The crash took place near the Coldbrook Road overpass just after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. The southbound lanes at the crash site have been closed at Exit 180, where traffic is being diverted.
Spokesman Steve McCausland said the trooper was out of his vehicle at the site of a disabled car along the interstate and the other vehicle involved in the crash was a tractor-trailer.
The trooper was rushed by ambulance to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he died.
Shortly after 10 a.m., the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office mobile crime lab was on the scene, along with multiple state troopers. Two of the troopers could be seen embracing each other.
