BANGOR – It was a very special celebration in Bangor on Friday.
Family and friends gathered at the Maine Veterans’ Homes in Bangor to wish Elmer “Skip” Plummer a very Happy 102nd Birthday.
“It’s new for me,” Skip said about the magnitude of the celebration. “I don’t think I’ve had anything like this, back then it was just family.”
On this day 102 years ago, President Woodrow Wilson signed a declaration of war against Germany. America entered the war to end all wars.
In Skip’s lifetime, he’s seen Americans fight in World War II, the Korean conflict, the Vietnam War, Iraq, Afghanistan and the War on Terrorism.
He was just a kid during the Great Depression and was later drafted into the Navy.
A fellow veteran sang “Happy Birthday” to him as he celebrated the milestone.
Skip said it was a great way to spend a birthday.
