ELLSWORTH – Counterfeit money is turning up in Ellsworth.
Ellsworth Police Chief Glenn Moshier said a man is facing charges for trying to give a counterfeit hundred dollar bill to a clerk at an Ellsworth store, who then notified authorities.
Earlier this week, Bangor Police arrested a woman for allegedly passing fake 50s and 100s.
“It seems to have trickled down, and although we’ve only had one so far, I suspect there may be others out there,” said Chief Moshier. “It appears there may be some connection to some drug activity. It’s possibly where this money is changing hands and so we’re taking a closer look at that as well.”
Chief Moshier says detectives in Ellsworth are working with the Bangor Police Department on this case.
In both cities, Asian characters were visible on the fake bills.
Ellsworth Police are asking anyone who believes they’ve received fake money to contact them at 667-2168.
