ELLSWORTH – Hundreds of new jobs are headed to Hancock County.
Officials at Jackson Lab announced this week they’ll be hiring 300 new employees over the next year in Bar Harbor and Ellsworth, including 200 in animal care.
The research lab is also raising its entry level wage to $15.75 an hour.
Ellsworth city leaders say the announcement is another sign of the area’s continued growth.
“A large number of people come through Ellsworth every day to get to Jackson Laboratory,” said David Cole, Ellsworth City Manager. “As the job growth continues at Jackson Laboratory, whether it be in Bar Harbor or Ellsworth, it’s certainly going to put additional demand on the housing market in Ellsworth.”
Cole says a developer is set to appear before the city’s planning board in June with plans to build two new housing complexes.
