ELLSWORTH – A Bucksport woman told a Hancock County judge Monday that she is not guilty of murder.
The judge denied bail for 21-year-old Savannah Smith, who is charged with murder in connection with the 2017 death of her former boyfriend’s 2-year-old daughter.
Smith was indicted on the murder charge earlier this month.
According to an affidavit filed in court, Smith was the only adult present during Kloe Hawksley’s last hours.
Smith’s attorney, Jeffrey Silverstein, said Smith does not have a prior criminal record.
He said her defense team will examine the timeline of the incident and present evidence to support an alternate explanation of the toddler’s death.
“My client was obviously disappointed,” said Silverstein. “She’s 21. She’s never been in jail and now she’s not getting out.”
The court document states the cause of the toddler’s death was blunt force trauma to her abdomen, causing numerous internal lacerations.
According to the affidavit, the medical examiner believed the child would have lived anywhere from four to 10 hours after the injury happened.
The affidavit also states that the toddler was dead for four to six hours before first responders were called to her Bucksport home.
