BANGOR – City councilors approved a ban Monday night on polystyrene food and drink containers.
Councilor members passed the ordinance banning styrofoam containers in a 5-3 vote.
Beginning in January of next year, businesses will no longer be allowed to use polystyrene to package food or drinks.
Businesses that violate the ban will face a fine of $100 to $200 dollars for the first offense. For a second offense, that fine will be raised to $250 to $500.
A similar statewide ban goes into effect in 2021.
