AUGUSTA – A proposal to create an automatic voter registration system in Maine is now law.
Wednesday, Governor Janet Mills signed a bill that would automatically register eligible Mainers to vote when they interact with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles or another approved state agency.
Supporters have said automatic registration would increase voter turnout, but those against it pointed to issues with inaccurate voter records in other states that have a similar system.
Maine is now the 19th state in the nation to adopt automatic voter registration.
However, lawmakers say this bill does not make registering to vote mandatory.
If you do not wish to register or have your information on voter rolls, you will be given the option to decline.
