AUGUSTA – As the legislative session drew to a close, Gov. Janet Mills signed a bill that will forever honor a fallen state trooper.
Detective Benjamin Campbell of Millinocket died on April 3 while assisting a stranded motorist on Interstate 95 when the wheel of a passing log truck struck him.
Sen. Jim Dill of Old Town sponsored legislation that would rename the West Branch Bridge in Indian Purchase Township the Detective Benjamin Campbell Bridge.
Indian Purchase Township is located right next to Campbell’s hometown of Millinocket, where his wife Hillary and 6-month old son live.
The bill becomes law 90 days after the legislative session adjourns.
A dedication will be held at a later date.
