The man who became known as the North Pond Hermit has completed a specialty court program.
A celebration was held in Augusta this morning for Christopher Knight and others who took part in the special program for offenders who have substance abuse or mental health disorders. Knight made international news in 2013 after getting caught stealing food from the Pine Tree Camp in Rome. He had lived in the woods for 28 years, surviving by taking food and other property from camp owners in the area. Knight committed more than one thousand burglaries over the years and pleaded guilty to 13.
By taking part in the alternative court program Knight was able to avoid a lengthy jail term.
He’s now living with and working for his brother and will maintain regular contact with his probation officer.
