AUGUSTA – In other sudden news out of Augusta today Dr. Sheila Pinette resigned her position as the State’s Chief Health Officer.
Her resignation comes just one month after taking the job. Pinette had overseen the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention since 2011.
During her time there the department was involved in a document-shredding scandal and the failed attempt to quarantine nurse Kaci Hickox who returned here after treating Ebola patients in Africa.
In late February Pinette left that position to take on her role as the Chief Health Officer for the Department of Health and Human Services. Officials at DHHS say Pinette’s resignation was voluntary and that she will continue to perform epidemiological work for the state on a contractual basis.
Dr. Christopher Pezzullo has been named acting Chief Health Officer.
