Members of Maine’s Congressional Delegation are asking for federal action regarding unfair subsidies.
US Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and Congressman Bruce Poliquin sent a letter to the United States International Trade Commission. They say Canada is violating trade laws, and that paper mills in that country are benefiting from subsidies by the Canadian government.
They say this has hurt mills in the US, because it’s caused certain types of paper to plummet in value, adding it was a contributing factor in the decision to curtail production and temporarily lay off non-salaried employees in Madison.
Collins, King, and Poliquin are asking that the ITC, issue a preliminary determination of material injury.
