WASHINGTON – A piece of legislation written by representative Chellie Pingree aims to make life easier for victims of sexual assault in the military.
The bill would make it easier for veterans to qualify for benefits. As they would now only need to show a medical diagnosis of a mental health condition, like PTSD, and a link between that condition and the assault that had taken place.
The bill is named the Ruth Moore Act, for a Maine veteran who was assaulted twice after enlisting in the navy at age 18. She reported the acts, but the attacker was never disciplined.
