AUGUSTA – It could soon be illegal for Maine drivers to hit the road when snow and ice is still on their cars.
A measure making its way through the State House would require all snow and ice to be removed from vehicles driving more than 40 miles per hour.
Current Maine law only requires driver to clear off their windshield and side windows. Lawmakers in support of the bill say it can be dangerous when sheets of ice fly off a car on the interstate’ cracking or shattering windshields.
As proposed, drivers who violate the law would be fined $250 for their first offense and $500 for every offense after that.
