ORONO – Panelists heard pitches from three different aspiring entrepreneurs, but only one could be the winner.
That person was Spencer Wood for his idea to give college students a free ride option, to avoid drunk driving. His app, he calls, Tip Whip, allows college goers to find a ride within a three mile ride radius of their location. Wood was up against two other innovators, one who was pushing a start up commercializing university research and another who was personalizing technology for elderly users.
Wood says that his reason for creating the app is from his college experiences. “As i played in football in undergrad and coming as an eighteen year old, growing up to who i am at 24 years old, five dollars isn’t worth getting in a car with your friends and driving us to where i wanna go because it’s faster and it’s going to save us five dollars.”
Students don’t have to pay for the services but can give whatever money they have on them at the moment.
As part of winning Spencer was given a 1,500 dollar check
