ROCKWOOD – A man from Rockwood has received his sentence for tax evasion and for the illegal dealing of lobsters.
53 year old Robert Thompson has been ordered to spend 8 months in priison and must also pay the Internal Revenue Service more than $65 thousand dollars in restitution.
According to the US Attorneys Office, Thompson hatched a money making scheme while managing the Spruce Head Fishermen’s Cooperative. He and some members struck an arrangement where they would bypass the co-op and he would pay them cash for some of their lobsters.
He then sold them to another company for cash even though he didn’t have a license to do so. Thompson also pleaded guilty to tax evasion for failing to pay taxes on those transactions and for other back taxes.
