BANGOR – The group routinely greets troops stopping through Bangor international airport. Now, they’re looking to honor Maine’s 44,000 Vietnam Vets.
On June 14th, they’re hosting a welcome home event at the Cross Insurance Center. Those with the troop greeters say these veterans never received the welcome home – and thank you – they deserve.
“At no time did these folks receive the tributes they should have received.” Chuck Knowlen, Chair, Maine Troop Greeters
“If they were seen in uniform, people would come over to them and they would spit on them and people would call them baby killers. I mean, they were just mean and they would just go and take off their uniform. Nory Jones, Event Chair,
“I think it was an unwanted war and a lot of people were hiding in the closet.” Robert Petersen, Maine Troop Greeter, Vietnem Veteran
The troop greeters are asking for the public’s help in reaching the state’s vets. For more information on the event and to RSVP visit the mainetroopgreeters.org.
