BANGOR – Downtown parking has long been an issue in Bangor and whether or not paid meters is the solution is at the center of debate.
City officials in favor of a paid parking system, say it would open up more spaces and cut down on car shuffling. Members of the downtown parking advisory committee advocate for meter kiosks charging a dollar per hour for the current 179 street spaces.
City councilor Ben Sprague stands in opposition of the idea. He doesn’t believe all efforts have been exhausted and says increasing ticket amounts and signage to public garages are positive alternatives to proposed plans.
A meeting of the business and economic development committee is set for next Tuesday. Meter proposals will be a focal point of that discussion.
