MACHIAS – A Washington County Grand Jury has indicted a former sheriff on felony theft charges.
Donnie Smith has been indicted for two counts of felony theft and misuse of entrusted property.
District Attorney Matt Foster says the charges stem from an investigation two years ago where Smith is accused of taking $12,000 from a fund meant to benefit inmates at the Washington County Jail.
He is expected to head to trial soon for misdemeanor charges of reckless conduct, driving to endanger and harassment.
Smith served two terms before losing his reelection bid last fall to Sheriff Barry Curtis.
We’ll be following this case as it continues to unfold.
