AUGUSTA – A bill that would ban food stamps from buying junk food is moving through the Maine legislature.
The bill sponsored by Senator Roger Katz would target items such as candy and soft drinks. On Monday a legislative committee gave it a positive recommendation.
Even if it passes, it’s not clear what the result would be. The federal government has never given a state permission to restrict junk food from being purchased with snap benefits.
The measure now heads to the full legislature for a vote.
