Greenville- Last night marked this years ice out, the time of year when boats can cruise from greenville Village to Northeast Carry without ice in their paths.
“It marks the official beginning of spring in the Moosehead Lake Region, so now everybody can celebrate,” said Roger Currier, owner of Currier’s Flying Service.
Currier spent years flying planes for the Fish and Wildlife Department, so with those years of practice, he now unofficially declares the ice outs each season. In fact, he and his wife take bets on when it will happen, and after all these years his wife might be as good as it as he is.
“She picked the fifth of May, and I said, ‘how do you pick the fifth of May?’ And she said, ‘Well, by your criteria’ and I actually picked the tenth of May, but she won,’ said Currier.
It’s one thing to declare the ice out from the water, but the views are much better when you fly. Currier offers rides in the sea planes to the public, where he points out landmarks and wildlife along the way. And trust me, this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss.
