BAR HARBOR- For six years now, the MDI Skate Park Association has been working to raise funds to add a new element to Bar Harbor.
“We want to build something that’s long lasting, that youth of the island who are either visiting or live here, to give them a place to do fun healthy outdoor activities that are free,” said Karen Svenson, a member of the MDI Skate Park Association.
Svenson and the rest of the committee have devoted years to raise money to build a special skate park in Bar Harbor. Sunday’s fundraiser was an indoor yard sale.
“People paid $20 to get a table and bring their own yard sale items, and we have a table that also represents the skate park we have baked goods and whatnot so it’s a community event,” said Svenson.
While the event was able to raise a lot of money to help fund the skate park, it also was beneficial to the participants.
“I had one customer who just acted like she was in a candy store. She just loved all the clothes for her granddaughter. So that was just really fun to see her happy and the little girl happy,” said Ruth Calis, a table holder at the yard sale.
Phase one of the skate park is set to begin in the fall in hopes of having it ready for spring. And this park is said to be unlike any other.
“It’s uniquely built to fit the land and the surroundings of mount desert island. We had a professional skate park designer do our plans for us so he came and looked at the site. So it will fit in nicely to the ballpark and have some other features and be entirely concrete so that it’s long lasting and have up-to-date state of the art elements,” said Svenson.
The skate park will be built on donated land from the town of bar harbor by the ball park. To learn more about MDI Skate Park Association and donate to the cause, like them on Facebook.
