AUGUSTA – Multiple bills to increase funding for technical education were discussed Thursday.
Senator Erin Herbig of Belfast, and Assistant House Majority Leader Ryan Fecteau of Biddeford have submitted legislation that would provide additional funding for the twenty-seven career and technical education centers statewide.
According to Wilton Hess, Chair of the State Board of Education, retirement aged employees in these trades are leaving in droves, and younger employees are needed to fill the vacancies.
He says the additional funding would provide new, up to date equipment that would keep the students engaged in the hands on training they receive.
“Folks at the CTE‘s do a wonderful job of scavenging and bringing used equipment for the kids to work on” says Hess “but they deserve the best equipment that’s available today.”
If the legislation passes, it will be the first time since 1998 that technical centers have received any additional funding.
