BANGOR – Industrial scrappers tearing down tanks along the waterfront Tuesday morning broke a gas line by accident in a way that Assistant Fire Chief Gregg Hodge calls a “first” for the department.
The severed gas line runs along the Penobscot River behind Hollywood Casino on Main Street and was broken just after 8 a.m.
Fire crews arrived within minutes and Bangor Gas was able to shut down the line rather quickly, according to Hodge.
“This is actually the first one where the pipe was on top of the ground,” Hodge said of gas leaks his department has responded to over the years. “Why that line is there, we don’t know. This is something that is abnormal to us. But the folks from Bangor Gas are on scene to determine why that line was there and what happened today.”
Hodge said the wind helped to disperse the gas by blowing it downriver.
As a precaution, gas levels were checked inside Hollywood Casino Hotel, Geaghan’s Pub and the Fireside Inn.
