AUBURN – Three people were arrested by Auburn police for allegedly attempting to use counterfeit $100 bills at a Home Depot.
Two of the three suspects ran off as the officers were arriving, according to a news release issued by the Auburn Police Department.
After investigating, police said the three people had been traveling through Maine from New York using counterfeit money to make purchases from different Home Depot locations.
Police said the three people were able to make several transactions at the Home Depot in Augusta, purchasing merchandise worth $3,500.
The three suspects are all from Bronx, NY. Auburn police said each of them was charged with aggravated forgery.
Bail for each of the suspects has been set at $25,000 cash.
Because this case involves significant counterfeit U.S. currency, auburn police said the U.S. Secret Service has been notified and will review the case for possible federal charges.
