BANGOR – City councilors met Wednesday to discuss the pros and cons of closing the connector from Central Street to Harlow Street and Hammond Street as well as Broad Street to Main Street to Merchants Plaza.
Downtown businesses voiced their displeasure to the proposal.According to Bangor Community and Economic Development Director Tanya Emery.
“I think the feeling was that the businesses that have remained open or are reopening felt that if there was any modest additional benefit by increased pedestrian traffic, it would be diminished by not having any vehicular traffic,” Emery said.
Emery also said the proposal would allow restaurants and retail stores to extend outside, giving businesses more space for customers while maintaining social distance.
The street closures would last until Labor Day.
