BANGOR- On Tuesday night, Bangor city councilors addressed gender inequality at their Government Operations Committee meeting.
They reviewed a draft resolve that would show their support for adding the Equal Rights aAmendment to Maine’s constitution.
Lawmakers in Augusta voted against adding this amendment last year, but it’s back on the agenda for this year.
While there are laws that prohibit gender discrimination in certain situations, it’s not in the state constitution.
“There is nothing about gender protection in the constitution,” said council chair, Clare Davitt. “The laws can be changed and removed easily. The constitution cannot be easily amended.”
City councilors will be voting on the resolve at their full council meeting next Monday.
