BANGOR – A dozen Bangor firefighters braved the chilly weather and mall traffic on Black Friday, all for a good cause.
They were “Filling the Boot” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, a tradition dating back nearly seven decades.
By the end of the day, the firefighters had raised a total of $14,176.88, a new record that beat their goal of $13,000.
“This is historically our biggest fund raiser throughout the year,” said Jared Bowden, the Bangor Fire Department MDA Coordinator. “We’ve been doing it for about 15 years, give or take. On average, in six hours we bring in anywhere from 12,000 to 14,000 dollars.”
So far this year, the fire department has raised more than $58,000 for MDA.
Last year, Bowden says they ended the year with a total of $48,000.
The fire department also is hosting the Jingle Bell Ball, another MDA fund raiser, on December 13.
