BANGOR- More construction and remodeling are coming to Pickering Square.
The city’s Finance Committee approved a plan to hire two firms to remodel Pickering Square and to add new transit hub.
City officials plan to hire Artifex Architects and Engineers to design the new transit hub, which will include a new building and bus platform and canopy.
“Their fee is $60,000. It was determined that was an appropriate fee, it was within the budget established by FTA so the recommendation is that the city execute a contract with Artifex to do the architectural drawing for the transit center building,” Bangor Finance Committee Chair Sue Hawes said.
She added there is work that needs to be done to prepare the area before the transit center building is actually built.
That work will be done by Eastwood Contractors for an additional $32,000.
“The work we’re looking to do, you know that raised island in front of the parking garage, we want to remove that, get it right out of the way take it in. The other thing is to remove the fountain foundation itself and then relocating the small bus shelter,” she said.
Assistant City Manager Richard Cromwell said he expects construction to begin next year spring.
“Within the next 30 days, hopefully sooner, they’ll start removing things at Pickering Square. We can shift the buses over and them prepared for the construction in the spring so I‘m hoping by fall 2021 we can see that building,” Cromwell said.
