AUGUSTA – Maine’s bicentennial coin was unveiled at the State House on Monday.
It features a moose and Moosehead Lake on one side and on the other, Monhegan Harbor and a working waterfront.
Gov. Janet Mills received the first coin and she made a quick reference to her Franklin County roots.
“It’s an important year to commemorate exactly what Maine has done, what Maine people have accomplished and I love the fact that western Maine is featured on the front side of the coin,” Mills said.
Two hundred coins are available in nickel and attendees of Monday’s event were first in line to purchase some of those.
There will also be a series of brass coins available for purchase at the Maine 200 website.
