AUGUSTA – Legislation to eliminate disability wait lists was discussed in Augusta on Monday.
LD 1984 would reduce or eliminate the current MaineCare waiting list for patients with intellectual disabilities, autism, brain injury and other related conditions to receive at home and community services.
The bill’s sponsor said the wait lists are a problem for those in need.
“Not only are the young adults languishing and slipping in their skills, and in the hope for their own lives, but their parents, most often the mothers, are forced to give up their careers, their jobs, to stay home,” said Sen. Rebecca Millett, D-Cape Elizabeth
A public hearing for the bill took place Monday afternoon. More than 20 people spoke in favor of it.
