AUGUSTA – A bill before the Maine Legislature aims to allow donor breast milk coverage by MaineCare.
Milk depots in Maine have donated pasteurized milk to help babies born prematurely.
The bill’s sponsor — Rep. Margaret Craven, D-Lewiston — said she has heard only support for MaineCare coverage.
Naomi Bar-Yam, executive director of Mother’s Milk Bank Northeast, supports the proposal.
“Also it’s kind of like inoculating them against diseases and that sort of thing,” she said.
“Getting donor milk like any other service should not depend on your ZIP code, should not depend on your income,” she said.
The bill was the subject of a work session Wednesday.
Those involved said like with giving blood, there is always a need for donations.
