BROOKS – Fire destroyed the gymnasium at a Christian camp Wednesday morning.
Fair Haven Camps Executive Director Josh Rose said the gym was a total loss, but it was the only building damaged.
Firefighters from throughout Waldo County assisted the Brooks Fire Department in battling the fire.
The Fair Haven Camps are located at 81 West Fair Haven Lane on Lake Passagassawakeag. The camps have been open for about 70 years.
Fair Haven is a regular camp during the summer but during the winter months, it offers a free after school programs called Grow for local students.
Rose said he got a call just after 8 a.m. telling him the gym was on fire.
He said the facility was used on a daily basis and that a variety of programs were held in the space.
It also housed some of the wood that was used to fuel the lodge and the gym.
Rose said the loss of the gym is a devastating blow to the whole community.
“Just a lot of heartache. We’ve put a lot of love into this and, you know, to see it all in the way it is, it’s heartbreaking,” he said.
Rose said the camp will remain open but that it will be more difficult to operate some of the programs during the winter months.
He said the gym was the only building affected by the fire.
It was not immediately clear how the fire began. The state fire marshal’s office has been called in to investigate.
