BANGOR – The man convicted of killing Cpl. Eugene Cole of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office in April of 2018l has been sentenced to life in prison.
John Williams, 30, of Madison was convicted of murder in June. During the trial, prosecutors told jurors, Williams shot Cole because he was going to be arrested on drug charges and Williams didn’t want to go to jail.
His defense attorney said Williams killed Cpl. Cole, but he did not do it willingly or intentionally because he was high on drugs.
Cpl. Cole was on duty when he was killed.
Williams took his cruiser and then hid in the woods. He was arrested after a four-day manhunt.
