BUCKSPORT- Annually there are ‘Community Clean Up Days’ in different towns to get residents to pick up trash and garbage throughout different communities.
Normally residents in Bucksport partake in their own version of clean-up day together with different organizations in their immediate area, but this year is a little different because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
So, instead of having a big event with hundreds of people going throughout Bucksport looking for trash, Maine Street Bucksport organized a Bucksport clean-up day that doesn’t break social distancing guidelines.
“We obviously can’t do that this year because we are social distancing so instead we just invited people to pick up trash at any point in front of their house or on their streets or in their neighborhoods, as a community event that we’re all doing separately,” Maine Street Bucksport Director Brook Minner said.
This is the fourth year of the clean up day in Bucksport and the first virtual clean-up day.
“Usually entire workplaces would let their staff take an hour come down and help us out. It’s not that hard to get a bag, put on some gloves and walk up and down your street a few times,” Minner said.
She also said the goal of the event is to unify people who while keeping the streets clean of litter.
“I think that we’re all really missing one another and missing our communities in different ways right now and I’m hoping that people feel that they’re part of something larger, even if they’re doing it by themselves or with their own families,” Minner said.
