CALAIS – Calais Regional Hospital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday.
A prepared statement from the hospital said it will remain open and operating as usual during the bankruptcy process, which is expected to last approximately 12 months.
The statement said filing for Chapter 11 protection during debt reorganization enables the hospital to continue providing high-quality care in local communities and keep jobs in the region.
Calais Regional Hospital currently employs more than 275 people and is one of the largest employers in Washington County.
The statement said administrators have asked for permission to pay employees during bankruptcy proceedings and no layoffs are planned.
Hospital officials said they expect to emerge from the bankruptcy with a stronger hospital.
