SULLIVAN – A day planned for clam digging ended with a capsized canoe and one man dead.
Early Thursday afternoon, searchers recovered the body of 36-year old Robert Hill of Trenton.
According to a statement from the Maine Department of Marine Resources, Hill’s canoe capsized on Flanders Bay in Sullivan around 10:30 Thursday morning.
Hancock County Sheriff Scott Kane said the other man in the canoe was rescued and it appeared as though he was suffering from hypothermia.
A friend of Hill’s said he would take any job to support his family, and there was no limit on what he’d do for a friend.
Authorities say the survivor was able to swim around 100 yards to shore, to call 9-1-1.
There was no indication if either person was wearing a life jacket.
