NEWBURGH – Piper Mountain Christmas Tree Farm has been selling trees rooted in family traditions and Christmas cheer for more than 40 years.
“The farm started in 1978. Jim and Norma Corliss, the former owners, started selling Christmas trees right from their front porch,” said the Owner of Piper Mountain Christmas Tree Farm, Mac McCullen.
“We bought the farm three years ago. This was our first year of operations all by ourselves, flying without a net as they say,” said McCullen.
Before Santa and his reindeer take flight, McCullen said he’s seen many people this Christmas season looking for the perfect tree.
According to McCullen, last year was the first year a real Christmas tree began gaining popularity over an artificial tree in Maine.
“I think it was a pretty steady year. On par with all the other years,” McCullen said. “We’ve seen customers that have been here for multiple generations but we also saw people that it was their first year here at the farm.”
There’s about 30 acres of Christmas trees to choose from and when you’re at Piper Mountain Christmas Tree Farm, the owner says, there’s only one rule to follow.
“You have to have fun when you come out here,” McCullen said. “We really strive to make this an experience that’s fun for everybody that comes out.”
With the hustle and bustle of the holidays McCullen said it can be hard to find time to spend with one another. He said Christmas goes beyond the tree and the presents under it.
“You can go anywhere and buy a Christmas tree but you really don’t get into the spirit until you spend that time with family. I think that’s what the holidays are really all about,” McCullen said.
