BREWER – While it’s the season to deck the halls, Brewer fire officials are reminding people how to do so safely.
Lt. Erik Tourtillotte said one in four Christmas tree fires is caused by electrical problems, so make sure to replace any lights with worn cords, and don’t leave them on overnight or while you’re away.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, Christmas tree fires aren’t common, but when they do happen they’re likely to be serious.
“Fires caused by Christmas trees can be extremely serious because they are a great fuel source for a fire, so just make sure you water it every day,” said Lt. Tourtillotte.
When picking a tree, make sure it’s nice and green and not dried out, and that the needles don’t fall off when you touch it.
Also don’t place your tree too close to a candle or heat source.
