ELLSWORTH- Holiday spirit was on display throughout downtown Ellsworth on Friday.
Friday morning, dozens gathered to celebrate Chamber Ugly Sweater Day, which was organized by members of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce.
“Every year we try to get everybody to wear their Christmas sweaters or their holiday sweaters, or whatever you want to call it, on one day. Instead of having businesses do it on separate single days. We wanted to do it so the entire city was dressed for the day,” said Gretchen Wilson, Executive Director of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce
Store owners and workers, lawyers, judges and even city officials were among the many who donned their ugly sweaters, not just on the courthouse steps, but all around the city.
“I think this is a great thing the chamber of commerce does, trying to get everyone in the community to wear an ugly Christmas sweater. And it’s just a little fun. It gets everybody all motivated, excited. What a great day is out here for something like this,” said Roman Perez, summer camp director for the Downeast Family YMCA.
He said people were very creative with their choice of sweaters.
“Trees and all the glitter and bling-bling, and elves carrying, this is your face and here’s your leg dangling. It’s pretty good and pretty funny,” he said, describing one of the many ugly sweaters he saw.
In many different businesses downtown on Main Street, people had their ugly sweaters on as well and Wilson said that shows how strong the Ellsworth community spirit is.
“It’s part of quality of life, especially in a cold climate like ours is how to have fun and how to stay warm. I think a warm community is a friendly community. People want to be here, people want to live here, extremely important,” she said
She says to visit the Ellsworth Chamber Facebook page to see pictures of everyone’s ugly sweaters from businesses across Ellsworth.
