BANGOR — A couple from Kenduskeag has been barred from shopping at the Bangor Walmart they say for taking too long to shop.
On June 4, Doug and Mary Savage went shopping at Walmart in Bangor for the last time — at least for the next year.
“All they got me for is loitering,” Doug Savage said.
The Savages said they apparently took too long shopping and were given a no trespass order for a year.
A company spokeswoman said the order has more to do with how Doug Savage reacted to a manager.
At the time, there was a 100-person store limit due to the coronavirus pandemic. Walmart spokeswoman Rebecca Thomason said the manager was trying to get more customers through the doors by asking customers with full carts to check out.
The couple got film developed, picked out some shirts and ordered a battery for their car before being approached by the manager.
“She said that ‘Your cart is full, you can leave’ more or less. I says, ‘What?'” Savage said.
He said he snubbed the manager.
“I started to walk off because she was making me nervous,” Savage said. “She said, ‘Don’t walk off, I’m talking to you’ and I just ignored her because I didn’t want to deal with her.”
Savage said that the following day, the couple returned for the car battery they had ordered and the police were called.
“I had the battery in the cart… They come up to me and said, ‘You gotta leave.’ I said, ‘What you mean?'” the Kenduskeag man said.
Savage admits he got upset.
“She really upset me bad and I was starting to have an anxiety attacks and I don’t like to get like I do. I can’t help it,” he said.
Savage added, “I know it’s discrimination against the elderly.”
“She’s disabled, legally disabled and she started almost started crying,” he said of his wife. “Why are they going to kick her out?”
Both Mary and Doug Savage were issued no-trespass orders. Bangor police Sgt. Wade Betters said the officer issued the order at the request of store management.
The Walmart spokeswoman said the raised voices created a disturbance.
“I didn’t start no problem that day. My voice raises when I am addressed about something I don’t think is right,” Savage said.
For now, the couple remains banned from the Bangor Walmart.
